Some Important Points Before You Begin

  • Decorators Market does not add or subtract any measurement allowances and will manufacture precisely according to the dimensions that you specify on your order. If you require any assistance with making any allowances, please contact us and we will be happy to provide you with further advice.
  • Decorators Market recommends using a retractable metal tape to measure your curtains.
  • Never assume that your windows, floors and ceilings are perfectly square. Measure at several points across the window and work off the smallest measurement.
  • Decorators Market processes your order in millimetres. Be very careful of making errors when converting feet and/or inches, or centimetres to millimetres.

STEP ONE: Measure the Curtain Width

The total width of your curtain is determined by the length of your track.

Ideally your track length should be at least 20%-30% wider than the window.  This will ensure there is enough space for the curtains to sit off the glass when open thus allowing maximum light flow in to the room.

Decorators Market recommends 20% stacking allowance for light, sheer curtains with tight pleating (not S-Fold).  Adding 30% to your window width is a good allowance for heavy lined curtains and S-Fold headings.

The stacking allowance can be evenly distributed either side of the window for centre-opening curtains or it can be entirely on one side for one-way draw curtains.

QUICK TIP: Always consider the overall footprint of your curtains in the room.  Make sure their projection won’t be obstructing any doorways, thoroughfares, furniture or cupboard doors.

STEP TWO: Measure the Curtain Drop

Once you have determined the width of your rod or track, you just need to decide how high you would like the curtains to sit.

Decorators Market recommends installing your rod or track no less than 100mm above the top of the window frame.  This distance will ensure adequate overall coverage which will maximise the thermal benefits of the curtains and create a nicely proportioned overall look to your windows.

QUICK TIP: Curtains hung from ceiling height will emphasise the vertical lines in your room, making your ceilings appear taller and your room will naturally feel more spacious.

The measurement that you need to submit to Decoators Market for manufacturing is the “finished drop”.  The finished drop is the raw measurement from the top of the curtain heading to the bottom of the curtain hem and it does not take in to account the dimensions and specifications of the rod or track.   You will need to make any necessary deductions or allowances based on the type of rod or track which you intend to use.

You may also wish to deduct 10mm at the bottom so that your curtain sits just above the floor.  This also gives you some allowance for your curtains to drop over time after the curtains are hung and gravity causes the fabric fibers to relax.
